Default The Who?

Really, they had The Who play at the Superbowl? I have no doubt that many younger people were saying...Who the hell are these guys with walkers? That was pitiful. Hell they could barely sing together. I am guessing only two of those guys are even original members? (the drummer looked to young, and they never showed the rest of the band.) They should have at least smashed their instruments or something in keeping with tradition. That show sucked. I even like some older rock, but that show just blew.

Is it just me, or is the NFL going out of their way to have old assed guys on stage after Janet showed her boob? They have had Springsteen, Petty, Prince and now The Who? (those are just the ones i can think of) Seems like they would want someone who is hot right now to perform. Or maybe give an up and coming band/artist a chance to shine.

The NFL is scared of another "wardrobe malfunction" so they keep dragging out the geriatrics who they feel are safe. Daltrey can no longer sing at all, they sounded so horrible in the opening song & then halfway thru magically got better. Hmm me thinks the lip syncing was turned on shortly after that Pinball wizard fiasco.

The drummer I was surprised to find out is Ringo Starrs kid & he's almost 45.

I don't know... They could have been better but I'll take them over Spring or Petty any day, and I'd take all three of them on thier worst day with my dog running the sound board over anything new and popular at the moment.

...maybe I'm just nostalgic but I miss the days when musicains were ugly but could ACTUALLY PLAY. In the past ten years I've been to more shows that suck than are good and ironically the ones that are good are usually older bands. The computer revolution has done some neat things as far as production, new sounds and effects and so on but it also helped MTV breed a generation of mindless idiots who will cherish anything out in front of them and a generation of "musicians" who have no talent and can't play live. You wany proof? How many bands tour now like they did then? The coluseum used to be booked with show after show after show, now it sits as a barely used relic, a reminder, for me at least of sneaking out of town and making excuses to go to one or two shows a month.

I'll sum it up by adding this...If I had known in the mid 80's that the "clap" affect being introduced to all keyboards at the time would become the snare drum of the future, I would have poured every once of my being into figuring out a way to patent it, trademark it, buy it, whatever and I would be retired as we speak.

I am going to call it right here, right now (Jesus Jones reference) that Styx will be playing next year.

I agree that probably most people at or watching the Superbowl had no clue who the band was, they thought, "Hey, I thought we were watching the Superbowl not CSI."

I thought that The Who did a good job. I think the NFL would prefer a boob verses another Ashley Simpson.

Holy shit I'm getting old. Making a comment like that is insulting to the band, the music and the history that those guys have made. For shit sake, they played WOODSTOCK!! Not the crappy MTV over commercialized remakes but the real one in 1969.

Yet again one of the problems with this generation...if it's not on the telly or Z104 or being forced down your throat by some other mass marketed nightmare it doesn't exist. Here's a wake up call kiddies, THERE ARE GREAT BANDS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW MAKING GREAT MUSIC THAT YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. In fact, the sad part is that even with the internet and how easy it is to find them, almost no one looks.

The only "new" band I enjoy right now is Chickenfoot & it's comprised of all old timers such as Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, etc.

I could name about 50 but they are FAR from top 40 and what will ever be popular.

...of course, I'm one who still misses the days when alternative music was truly "alternative" (read wierd to most).

I'll agree with you Rott, i am not a fan of most pop music...worse yet is the pop/hip-hop mix that is so popular.

I just thought that The Who are about 20 years past the point of trying to do concerts.

They are indeed past their prime as are Spring, Petty, and most likely those who will be featured in the future but unless the music industry decides to reward talent over the next look this trend will most likely continue for quite some time.

Never would I have thought as I spent countless hours of my youth in guitar classes, practicing in my bedroom, playing in practice spaces that were unconditioned basements, attics and garages that years later many who are making tons of money in music wouldn't even be able to play.

You don't believe me? You want proof that modern music is mostly talentless? When is the last time you saw one of these current hip/hop artists tour extensively? When you do, where is their band? Who is in the bands? The answer is most often simple. Milli Vanilli. These people are lip sync artist and products of studio musicians and producers.

If I'm wrong, someone PLEASE fill me in. I know that there is a guy here that does mastering. Please fill us in on the real scoop.

Great, now I have that Donna Summer song stuck in my head. We know Rott works hard for his money, so you better treat him right.

There is actually one radio station on town that sort of still features lesser know, but good bands. 105.5 triple m, think of them as what 92.1 WMAD used to be, but more like soft/jazz/blues/adult comtemp music.

I miss the "happy" music. Why does it all have to be sad, depressing, or have unpleasant lyrics?

What happened to the romantic music, the "sing-along" songs, etc? Why do we have to focus on people gettin' shot, baby mommas, baby daddies, jail/prison, welfare, etc?

Where are those "real" musicians that sang the songs and PERFORMED. Standing there singing/rapping does NOT constitute a PERFORMANCE.

Don't tell me no-one sings along to the oldies station once in a while...

from what I see, it seems to be the same problem as with other industries around the US: big corporations run by CEOs that care only about getting the stock prices higher, not what they make or how they make it.

Don't blame it on the music industry. They put out what sells. They have a formula that works pretty damn good. Can't really blame them.

Someone will come along and change the face of music. Until then the music industry will keep putting up what sells.

But really Rott, you are sounding like one of those crusty old bastards that wants everything to be the same as "back when i was a kid..." Times/things/styles change.

Listening to Z104 is as bad as watching MTV!
The station dictates what's cool and what is popular. And what do people like? What is popular, is the answer. Everyone wants to be popular. If you can turn on the radio and hear at least once per hour, the same songs that are all over MTV and used in promotions by the media, then that means it must be a good song, right? Yay kids! Let's all sing along now! We all know the words, because EVERYBODY knows the words. Even if its not on purpose.

Fuck, I hate mainstream shit. Mainstream may not even be the right word. Just think Kanye West, All American FUCKING REJECTS, Britney Spears, you know, all the shit that all the kiddies just eat up.

1. Agreed. And to a point I don't. I blame the Shiny happy people masses even more than the industry.

2. Man I hope it comes soon. Pandora has ACTUALLY become a decent source for finding a ton of good stuff. Now if only we could make it profitable/feasible for some of teh surrent little guys to get out and tour.

3. Yeah, I pretty much figured I was coming off that way so I'll defend myself by saying the following...

The reason I go to the "back when I was a kid" thing is because I miss the days when one could see national and regional acts locally for a reasonable price and actually feel as though they got thier money's worth. I want music back for myself and others becsue it is one of the truest releases I have ever had (aside from riding). I'm sure others can relate. Times DO change and so do my musical tastes, but what suprises me is how many GREAT acts never get what they deserve while manufacted hacks like Milli Vanilli, NSYNC, Brit, Rhianna, The Killers, and others survive. THAT is the tragedy.

You may giggle at this this but in 05 I took my wife to see Bon Jovi at the Kohl center, don't recall what tickets cost but they weren't bad. And we both felt it was a great show, that whole place was rockin & everyone appeared to have a fantastic time.

PS, forget we also saw Poison at Willow island in 08, I thought Sebastian Bach pretty much sucked but Poison put on a pretty good show & tickets were only $37.

This illustrates my point. You are talking about bands that have been around for over 20 years.

$37 isn't horrible but it sure istn't great. Some of the best times I've EVER had were the $5 punk shows in Storrs, CT. They held them every or every other Saturday night, typically with 4-5 bands 7:00 til bar time-ish (didn't matter when they got done it was on campus) and at least teo of the bands at every show were reagional touring acts. I saw Br. Big, No Mistake, Forklift, Dropkick Murphy's and a host of others. THAT was entertainment. The Madison scene has never recovered from the fire at O'cayz Corral.

I was wondering when you would bring up Dropkick Murphys. I can't remember the band, but I know there are bands out there that don't care to make it big, that just want to play the small clubs and venues. Granted I am not one to go to concerts, but finding new artist, or at least new to me is nice.

I think music is a way of release, maybe not as much as you Rott, but it helps for relaxing or anger.
